Dear friends,

Three weeks ago today, I was there when one of the members of our community was assaulted while being called “faggot” on King Street. He sustained a concussion and fractures in a several places in his face. I never thought it could happen in Santa Cruz, but since that date I’ve heard stories from four other people of similar incidents. Hate speech results in hate violence and now the Catalyst is bringing one of the most virulently homophobic singers in the world to our community tomorrow (Sunday the 11th) and I plan to speak out against it.

I will be joined by members of the GLBT alliance and our community who believe that the Catalyst bears responsibility for their decision to invite, profit from and give venue to a group who openly calls for the killing of gays and lesbians. Sizzla is by far one of the worst of the worst, bragging about having killed gay men and inciting others to do the same at a concert in Chicago. He has repeatedly refused to apologize for his actions and has said that it is gay and lesbian people who should apologize.

While I certainly believe in free speech, I believe there is a difference between free speech and hate speech. There is a difference between defending a person’s rite to free speech and profiting from their virulent homophobia. If they called for the murder of women, African Americans, Jews, latinos, or any other minority, there wouldn’t even be a question of whether they should be invited into our community. As a gay man, I’d like to think that this should be no different.

I ask all of you to join me and other members of our community to speak out and let everyone know that these are not our values and that the Catalyst should be held accountable for profiting from hatred.

WHEN: Sunday, Sept 11th – 7:00 p.m.

WHERE: Catalyst (1011 Pacific Ave)

WHO: Those who choose not to remain silent

Some information about Sizzla:

Sizzla has gone well beyond denouncing homosexuality; they have openly and repeatedly advocated the killing of gay men. At a reggae concert in Chicago, Sizzla bragged that he kills queers and incited the audience to murder gays and lesbians. Sizzla’s recent British tour was cancelled because the British government refused to allow him into the country; a reggae festival in France at which Sizzla was set to perform was cancelled because of the singer's virulent homophobia; a major reggae festival in Jamaica this summer was fined a reputed $20 million by its sponsor because of Sizzla's homophobic performance -- and now he's coming to Santa Cruz. Sizzla has repeatedly refused to apologize for his virulent homophobia and has said that it’s the gay and lesbian people who should apologize.

Some of Sizzla's lyrics include (translations in parentheses):

Pump Up
Step up inna front line (Step up to the front line)
fire fi di man dem weh go ride man behind (burn the men who have sex with men from behind)
Shot battybwoy, my big gun boom (Shoot queers, my big gun goes boom)

Boom Boom
Boom boom! Batty boy them fi dead (Boom boom! Queers must be killed)

Get To Da Point
Sodomite and batty bwai mi seh a death fi dem (Sodomite and queers, I say death to them)
Mi no trust babylon fi a second yah so (I don¿t trust Babylon for a second)
Mi a go shot batty bwai dem widdi weapon ya (I go and shoot queers with a weapon [as in gunshots])
FireDrums IV :: Thur, Sept 28th - Sun, Oct 1st 462 views since posting on Sunday, August 20, 2006
Location SF Bay Area
FireDrums IV
Thursday, September 28th - Sunday, October 1st, 2006

FireDrums is about bringing the global Fire Arts and Drumming Communities together to share knowledge and to propel these burgeoning Art Forms forward. The past 3 FireDrums were blessed with some of the most epic Fire Spinning and Drumming Jams of all time with participation from some of the world's most amazing Fire Dancers and Drummers. Truly inspirational!

FireDrums will always be open to everyone at any skill level even if you've never lit-up. Whether you're learning, teaching, sharing, inspiring, or being inspired, we welcome anyone interested in being part of the abundance of advancement that occurs when a convergence of this magnitude transpires. We look forward to revisiting old friendships and creating new ones with those who love the beat of the drums and the warmth and glow of the flame.

Everyone was a beginner at some point in their development and you can often learn just as much from teaching as you can from being taught. There will be organized and impromptu interactive workshops in the various disciplines of the Fire and Flow Arts and Drumming throughout the gathering.

LOCATION: We've secured the beautiful Cutters Scout Reservation exclusively for our next FireDrums gathering. Cutter Scout Reservation is a full-service camping facility located in the coastal mountains of California above Santa Cruz. This breath-taking 300 acre camp ground is located 25 miles from Santa Cruz and 67 miles from San Francisco. Cutter is about 2,200 feet in elevation and it's in some of the last old-growth redwoods on the West Coast. There is a full-size swimming pool, a small lake with canoes, hiking trails, bathrooms & showers with running water, bbq's, and so much more!

Things to bring: Your highest self, fire toys, drums, fuel, fire safety equipment, whatever you need to be happy in the woods, camping gear, tent, food, drinking water, friends & family, flashlight, sun screen, bathing suit, layers for varying temperatures, love & good vibes.

Things not to bring: alcohol, dogs, bad vibes.

As always, this is a LEAVE NO TRACE gathering!

Please car pool as there is very limited parking!

These 2 previous topics are VERY IMPORTANT POINTS!

This is a scout camp located within a beautiful national forest and it's our 1st gathering at this location. It's imperative that we show absolute respect for their beautiful land or we will not be invited back again. We have conveyed to Cutters how wonderful and respectful everyone has been at our past 3 gatherings and that FireDrums is not a rave or party scene.

Total capacity is strictly capped at 600 attendants by the Cutter Ranger!

Advanced Purchase Tickets: $40
*Only the 1st 450 pre-sold tickets are available at this price*
*The last 150 advanced tickets will be $50*

On-Sight (Gate) Tickets: $50
*Only available if FireDrums doesn't sell-out from Advanced Purchase Tickets*

To purchase tickets and for more info, please go to www.firedrums.org

Ticket price includes entrance to the gathering, use of all of the features listed above, up to 72 hours of camping, swimming, and lots of fun! By securing the reservation for our exclusive use, we can now put the funds received towards making this an even better experience for everyone at a lower individual cost than past FireDrums gatherings.
I'm moving to Santa Cruz this summer and I love dance jams so I wanted to check out Dance Church this Sunday. However, I've been there a couple of times before and though I enjoyed it very much. I was sad that I didn't know other people there and didn't have an opportunity to dance with anyone other than myself. THere seems to be a sense of comradery and playfulness at Dance Church and I would like to take part. So if you see me there this Sunday please dance with me. I love contact and non-contact dance and I would love to meet you. Hmm, I'll be wearing loose black crop pants and I have short curly hair, but hell please dance with lots of other people you don't know as well. Also, I'm interested in finding out what contact classes/jams/projects are going on in Santa Cruz, so let me know if there's anything interesting going on in that vein also.

A little history about Dance Church--the 418 Project is a dance and performance space on the south side of downtown Santa Cruz, California (see http://www.four-eighteen.org/ ). They've had Friday night dance jams there for years.

About the middle of 2001, a young woman named Kerry did a community project for her dance studies at UC Santa Cruz that involved the realization of the idea of a Dance Church. She and her friend Michelle were inspired by their mutual friend Jim to create and publicize Dance Church.

Dance Church is basically a Sunday morning dance jam that tends to have more uplifting music. I have a hard time classifying the kind of music the DJs spin. It is the same kind of music played at the Friday night jams but with a more spiritual feel.

Dance Church meets every Sunday from 9:00 to 11:30 AM at 418 Front Street in Santa Cruz.

--

I got involved after returning from my first Burning Man in 2002 and feeling the need to find a similar community at home. I went to the 418 in the fall of '02 to get updated on the Friday jam and found Dance Church. I've been attending ever since. I was one of the dancers on hand at the creation of a Dance Church camp at BM '03. I created a Yahoo! Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DanceChurch/ . I've done a couple of short video pieces on Dance Church.

--

When the local BM regional "Burning Beach" hooked me up with Tribe.net, I thought it would be good to create the Dance Church tribe here as well. I like the way photos are integrated into the fabric of individual and tribe listings. I also like the "degree" method of building a network.

My personal goal is to bring community dance and movement into my life every day. Last year at Burning Man I was able to do that, and the 418 Project and Dance Church help me work towards that goal the rest of the year.

--

I've found a lot of love at Dance Chruch. I hope you can join us. Thanks to Dana, Heidi, and Kwai for inspiring this post!
